There's a FreeBSD port in mail/spamd, which contains the workaround
(basically #defining the reentrant functions *_r() away, as they are not
really used concurrently).
There's nothing in FreeBSD's syslog(3) that would explain the effect you
describe (messages lost after 10 minutes), you might have to check the
source of some well-behaved, long-running daemon which syslogs, and see
if it does something differently.
Have you tried running syslogd with -d, check whether it produces any
interesting debug log?
